Overprints of Falkland Islands stamps were issued for use in four groups of South Atlantic islands in 1944. In 1946, these were replaced by a single dedicated issue inscribed Falkland Island Dependencies.

In March 1962 South Shetland, South Orkneys and Graham Land became British Antarctic Territory, leaving South Georgia which from 1963 had its own stamps again. From 1980, stamps were again issued inscribed Falkland Island Dependencies (Sc-1L38 SG74A) for use in South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.

In 1986 South Georgia joined with South Sandwich Islands.
