In 1903 Mauritania was made a French Protectorate, in 1904 a Civil Territory under French West Africa, and in 1921 a French colony. From 1944 until 1959 it used the stamps of French West Africa.

In November 1958 the Islamic Republic of Mauritania was created as an autonomous state within the French Community and it became independent in November 1960.
