Featured lots

Each month I will feature some of the lots in the current auction. This month I feature two lots of lesser expense relative to the fair number of very expensive items for auction. I chose these lots because I rarely see them for sale either in dealer bourses or on the internet. Although not "rare", these sets can legitimately be termed scarce.
Lot 6: Anguilla #1-5. Anguilla was formerly part of Saint Kitts until it set up a de facto government and was recognized by the UPU in the mid 1960s. For a long time, St. Kitts refused to recognize Anguilla - so the Anguilla mail was principally sent through Saint Thomas, Virgin Island PO. During those early times, St. Kitts took the entire stock of stamps from the Anguilla PO (because they were St. Kitts stamps), and overprinted them. Then, however, they refused to sell the mint, overprinted stamps, saying that the supplies were so low that they could not sell them to collectors. The low supply of stamps sent from St. Kitts forced the Anguilla PO to adopt the same policy of not selling mint stamps at the window. Rather, they applied the stamps and canceled them as the mail was brought to the PO. Yikes!!!

Lot 34: Brunei SG#1. Info from my SG catalog. On July 18, 1895, a set of 10 "Star and Crescent" stamps was issued in Brunei. For many years, the status of the 1895 issue remained uncertain and the 1906 provisionals on Labuan were taken to be the first issue of Brunei. [The 1906 provisionals are still considered the first set by Scott.] There is no doubt that the Star and Crescent set was devised purely for philatelic purposes in an agreement between Sultan Hashim and J.C.Robertson, who printed them. In 1895, Brunei did not belong to an international postal union, so the Star and Crescent stamps were valid only within the state or on mail to Labuan or Sarawak. There are covers, however, that bear these stamps within that area and also outside that area (franked with accompanying Labuan stamps for international conveyance). Lot 131: Mexico #1 - Maravatio District (no picture). Although there have been several Mexico #1s for auction over the years, this is very likely the first from the Maravatio district. A peek at our own First Issues web site page that gives details on the Mexico #1 districts reveals that only 5447 stamps from this district were sold. To see the other info on Mexico #1 (plus loads of other material), click on "Site map" in the banner across the top of the page, scroll down to the "First issue details by country" and select Mexico. Our web site is truly becoming a great reference for First Issue information!!!!

NOTE!!!! Lot numbers with a double asterisk (**) indicate 100% of the bidding price was donated to FICC. Lot numbers with a single asterisk (*) by the lot numbers indicate that 50% of the high bid will be donated to FICC. There are 67 lots with a * and 5 lots with a **. Bidding on those lots will benefit the club most. Thanks to the 2 members who made those donations (both are new to the club in the 6 months)!
