Featured lots

Each month I will feature some of the lots in the current auction. This month, there are nine lots that have never been offered in a First Issues mail bid sale to date (#7, 19, 22, 110, 113, 117, 163, 185 and 186), and 5 more lots that have only been offered once in the previous 27 auctions (lots 5, 6, 52, 54 and 100). This is really extraordinary. Following are the lots I chose to feature.

Lot 19: Kewkiang (China Local) Scott #1-10. A sprinkling of China locals have been offered in past auctions (Wuhu is one I remember). Now that the Scott Classic Catalog lists all 10 Chinese Treaty Ports (Locals), these issues should increase in popularity among FICC members. Kewkiang Scott #1-10 is a complete set of the first issue. These all have very nice, readable cancellations with different dates although the full date is not always shown. The “few sm faults” stated in the lot description include some shortened/clipped perfs on #1, #5, #8 and #9 (this could very well be a normal state as these stamps have very rough perforations anyway) and the lower area on #9 did not have a strong ink transfer during printing. I could detect no thins on any of the stamps.

Lot 22: Columbia-Boyaca Scott #1. Not much to say about this stamp. It is centered to the right and low, but still has 4 clear margins. The hinge remnant may be a detractor to some (it will not be easy to remove, if you are foolish enough to try), but a very presentable stamp overall.

Serbia and Montenegro First Issue, lot 110

Lot 110: Serbia and Montenegro First Issue. Here is the most recent #1 to be issued. As previously reported in First Issues (Vol 11, Nr 1, p2), Yugoslavia became a dead country when Serbia and Montenegro voted to drop the name. The new name officially became “Serbia and Montenegro” on Feb 4, 2003. On April 3, the new country issued their first stamps: a set of two, each commemorating the Council of Europe with a stylized e and a circle of 12 stars over a map of Europe. Denominations of the 2 stamps are 16 dinars and 28.70 dinars. These stamps are so new that Scott has not given them a catalog number yet (but it is coming soon – perhaps before this issue gets to the membership). I picked up a couple sets of these stamps from a dealer in Europe. I paid $2.00 per set – which is now the min bid. For each set sold, I will donate all amounts over $1.50 (50c minimum) to the FICC treasury. Some members will wait to see what the CV is when Scott lists them – which is a reasonable strategy. Then again, $2.00 is not an exorbitant price. Not meant to be a “scare tactic”, but word in the European stamp market is that this country (Serbia and Montenegro) will not likely last very long, and the two countries will split. For this, we’ll wait and see. Perhaps there will be two more #1s in our not-too-distant future.

Lot 113: Spain Scott #10L1. A gorgeous stamp from the Mexican Revolutionary Overprints. The city of Malaga chose to overprint these stamps as part of the patriotic celebration associated with liberation. There are 4 clear margins on the face, ranging from 1mm on the top and right to 2mm on the left. The gum is pristine. A choice stamp.
