Polands first issues
« on: December 21, 2002, 05:55:48 PM »

Should we distinguish between the various local issues in Poland around 1919? Here are the options:
Nov. 17 1918: Warsaw issue: OK Scott #11
Dec. 5 1918: Ljublin issue: OK? Scott #27
Jan. 17 1919: Krakow issue: OK? Scott #41
Jan. 19 1919: Northern Poland: OK (?) Scott #81
Jan. 27 1919: Southern Poland: OK (?) Scott #109
Aug. 5 1919: Poznan issue: OK? Scott #72
Sep. 15 1919: Gniezno issue: OK? Scott #77
1919-20: National Assembly issue: OK? Scott #133
1919: General issue: OK? Scott #140

Any others?
What's you opinion?

Such local issues are probably of interest only to a Poland specialist.  I have no desire to keep up with them, or from other countries.  The primary first issue, be it Sc.#1 or whatever # is time consuming enough.

Then, which one is the "real" first issue?

Scott #81 and / or #109? Or #133 or #140?

Huh Huh Huh

Every last one of them has a legitimate claim to being a "first issue".  I, like Bob, have not provided space for them in my album, but I once bought a collection which had them all.

This is what makes "first issues" collecting such an intriguing area.  My personal preference is to collect the first issue after each major political change or change in postal bureau.  Hence, my poland first issues are #1 (under Russian dominion), #11-14 (which I chose aribtrarily to represent the first issues of the republic), and #156-62 (the first issue after the new consitution on March 17, 1921).  All the rest of the #1s mentioned could well be in someone's collection per their interest.

If a stamp which appears after a major political change qualifies as a new number one, you'd never get out of the Latin America area into the rest of the world.  Wink
