The C.M.T. issues came into being after the Romanian army had occupied Kolomyya and the entire Pokutia region of Western Ukraine in 1919.

Cook Island - why?

I have tried to search the Internet for more information - to no avail. Very little information is there at all.
One thing that may "trip us up" is the spelling of the various names. For example, Chernyavskyj is not recognized, but Chernyavsky (without the 'j') is. That doesn't mean that the spelling is wrong, though! Also, Kolomyya is called Kolomna, too.
It seems that we really need "real people" to shed some light on this issue. Who's the first to come up with something?
It is quite interesting that there is no information available; sounds like a perfect candidate for a government program

David,
I believe you and I discussed this a while back by email. I think you said you asked both Chris Ceremuga and one of the other world experts on Western Ukraine stamps thier opinions. Could you please summarize that information again (or is it all in the original post)?

The gist of it, the two schools of thought, is in the original post. I do not mind quoting the dead. Their words are usually quoted from some writing to which reference can be made and checked. To quote the living is riskier, and to mis-quote the living is neither nice nor fair. So, if one of you experts, or students, of these C.M.T. stamps happens to read these lines, please help us out with your findings or opinions. We're interested.

For those who do not know (that includes me ): According to Worldwide Stamp Identifier ( http://www.geocities.com/iswsc1/iswsc_identce.html) C.M.T stands for "Compana Militaire Timbru" which translates to "Military Campaign Stamp". They were issued in 1919 during the Romanian occupation of the Pokutia region in Western Ukraine. There is one small problem: "Compana" is not a Romanian word. It should probably be "campanie". Also, "militaire" is not a Romanian word! It is probably "militarie" or "militar". Timbru is OK ;-) The overprint was done on stamps of Austria of 1916 - 18.

Regarding spelling of names: I found these variations in connection with Ukraine: - Koloma
- Kolomea
- Kolomna
- Kolomyia
- Kolomyja
- Kolomyya
- Rumania until 1966
- Romania after 1966
- Chernyavskyj - zero hits
- Chernyavsky - hits, but not obviously useful
- Dr. Ivan Cherniavsky - philatelic expert!
I have to stress again: one spelling is not wrong and the other right! It depends on the language of the translation and local customs.

I found this small piece of history: "In 1919 a determined protest against the Boyar Roumanian [note spelling!] occupation of Bukovina grew into a massive uprising in Khotyn and an uprising at the 113th regiment in Chernivtsi." Another fragment: "1918-40. On 25 October 1918 the Ukrainian Regional Committee, with Omelian Popovych as chairman, was established in Chernivtsi to represent the Ukrainian National Council in Bukovyna[note spelling!]. This committee organized a massive public rally in Chernivtsi on 3 November to demand that Bukovyna be attached to Ukraine, and on 6 November it took power in the Ukrainian part of Bukovyna, including Chernivtsi. Rumanian moderates, led by A. Onciul, accepted the division of Bukovyna into Ukrainian and Rumanian sections, but Rumanian conservatives under I. Flondor's leadership rejected this idea. On 11 November the Rumanian army occupied Chernivtsi and all Bukovyna in spite of resistance from the Ukrainians. The General Congress of Bukovyna, which was hastily summoned by the Rumanians, declared the unification of Bukovyna with Rumania on 28 November. The Treaty of Saint-Germain, signed on 10 September 1919, recognized Rumania's right to the part of Bukovyna settled by Rumanians. On 10 August 1920 the Treaty of S
