Here are some basic info to get you started:

On August 16, 1884 the Nieuwe Republiek was proclaimed.

On September 23, 1884 Vryheid was founded as the capital.

On January 4, 1886 the first stamps were issued.

On July 20, 1888 Nieuwe Republiek seized to exist. By agreement it was made a district of Transvaal.

In January 1903 Vryheid and Utrecht were incorporated into the Province of Natal because they were formerly part of Zululand.

Om May 31, 1910 Natal became part of the Union of South Africa.

Okay Jesper,

I just gotta say it....   certainly seems like you've stretched 1886-1888 a bit in both directions.   Grin

By the way, I presumed the significance of this time span was due to the various issue dates of New Republic Sc#1 - and the events that dealt with each issue occurring.  But I just double checked David's list of issue dates and they span from 9Jan86 to 17Jan87.  So...  what is the significance of the 1986 to 1988 span?

Simply that the "name" Nieuwe Republiek existed in this period - the other dates are significant only for the genealogy of New Republic ;-)

The last printing of the 1d (Scott #1) was on January 17, 1887.

The last date on the FIRST issue of N.R. was January 20, 1887 (as 20 JAN 87 AND as JAN 20 87). The second issue, without date and with embossing, was issued in February - March of 1887.

You may draw your own conclusions from these dates:
Why did it take almost a year and a half before the first stamps were issued?
How come no stamps were printed between March 1887 and July 1888?

I must say - it is incredible that I have to explain everything to you guys ;-)
