A group of around 550 small islands in the western Pacific, the Caroline Islands were discovered in 1526, claimed by Spain in a dispute with Germany and bought by Germany in 1899. The islands were occupied by Japan in 1914 and became a Japanese mandated territory. The US captured the islands during WW2 and in July 1947 they became a United States trust territory.
