Aegean Islands in the Scott catalogues, Dodecanese Islands in Gibbons.
Italian offices abroad in Scott, occupation issues in Gibbons.
These are 12 (hence dodeca-) small islands (plus the capital, the larger island of Rhodes) in the south-east Aegean Sea (hence Aegean).
The islands declared their independence from Turkey in 1912, only to be invaded by Italy in May of that year as part of the Turco-Italian War.
Italy retained control following the Graeco-Italian Agreement of August 1920.
The islands were occupied by the British in 1944 (using GB M.E.F. issues) and transferred to Greek administration in March 1947.
There was a general issue (starting with EGEO overprints) on 22nd September 1912 , followed in December by issues for the individual islands. The catalogues treat Rhodes differently from the smaller twelve as it had a larger range of issues including dedicated stamps in addition to the overprints.
